Galactic Cowboys

Encyclopedia : G : GA : GAL : Galactic Cowboys

Galactic Cowboys were a heavy metal band based in Houston, Texas. They combined progressive metal with a style of vocals influenced by The Beatles and the heavy playing style of thrash bands such as Anthrax .

History

Radio static, a cow mooed, a mirror broke and a flamenco guitar began to play. Thus began the debut album Galactic Cowboys on DGC Records (a subsidiary of Geffen) in 1991. It was widely praised by critics and music-lovers alike, and received a KKKKK rating from UK rock magazine Kerrang!. [[Citing sources citation needed]] Unfortunately for the Galactic Cowboys, the album was released during the same week as a very popular album by the band Nirvana. Due to the overwhelming response to Nirvana's Nevermind DGC paid little attention to the marketing and development of Galactic Cowboys. After poor first album sales and a little touring, the band went back in the studio. In 1993, they released Space In Your Face and scored a minor hit with "If I Were A Killer", which received regular airplay on MTV. [[Citing sources citation needed]] The first release, "I Do What I Do", received some regular rotation on the, now defunct, nation-wide rock radio station ZROCK. However, it was at this point that the band were dropped by DGC records and guitarist Dane Sonnier subsequently left the band.

Galactic Cowboys returned in 1996 with album number three Machine Fish on Metal Blade Records, along with new guitarist Wally Farkas. Not long after they released their EP, Feel The Rage. This release was comprised of the song of the same name (off their Machine Fish album) plus covers, live tracks and a new song. It was in 1997 that they released The Horse That Bud Bought, which was a minor departure for the band. They used a similar songwriting style but lightened the tone.

In 1998, they released At The End Of The Day. The album contained the "Machine Fish Suite", a series of songs woven together, telling the story of the band up to that point. Even before this album was released, it was decided that drummer Alan Doss would part ways with the band. Erick Tatuaka was hired to play drums for the ATEOTD tour, but was not a member of the band. In 2000, the band released Let It Go, which would be their last album. It had lead vocal contributions from all members of the band. The majority of the drumming duties were handled by the band's good friend Jerry Gaskill, of King's X. The final song, The Record Ends, ends in a barrage of noise and musical mayhem.

The former members of the band continue to be active in the music scene.

Monty Colvin

The bassist and backing vocalist for Galactic Cowboys from 1991 until 2000, Monty Colvin embarked on a solo career in 2000 with his band project Crunchy. The first album, All Day Sucker, released in 2001, defined the Crunchy sound as fun, pop punk with a slight heavy guitar edge. On Crunchy's 2nd album, Clown School Dropout, the band was stripped down to Monty playing most of the instruments and bringing in a hired drummer; here Monty added a bit more crunch to the formula. Band influences include the Wildhearts, Cheap Trick, Foo Fighters, and the Ramones, in addition to the aforementioned Galactic Cowboys.
