Gamaliel III

Encyclopedia : G : GA : GAM : Gamaliel III

Gamaliel III (3rd century CE) was the son of Rabbi Judah haNasi (Judah I), who appointed him his successor as nasi. Little is known about his activities, but it is likely that the revision of the Mishnah was completed during his era.

The Mishna records three of his sayings, one dealing with the moral duty towards public welfare; another with the selfishness of governments; another with submission to the will of God. In Chapter 2, Mishna 2 he is recorded as advising that the study of Torah goes hand in hand with a worldly occupation.

He was the father of Judah II.
