Gambia International Airlines is the national carrier airline of Gambia, based in Banjul. It operates largely regional passenger services in West Africa.

Code Data

History

The airline was established on 23 January 1996 and started operations on 1 March 1996. It started off as a ground handling company at Banjul International Airport, but has since expanded into flight operations. On 1 December 2000 the first flight took off in co-operation with Air Namibia. It is owned by the Government of Gambia (99%) and Gambia Telecommunications Company (1%).

"Gambia International Airlines recorded a pre-tax profit of D1.3 million in 2003, but was forced to suspend sub-regional flight operations in April, 2004 due to operational problems. To restart flight operations in the sub-region, GIA is negotiating to lease a Boeing aircraft and aims to sign a final contract shortly" (extract from Government of Gambia Budget Speech 2005).

Gambia International Airlines operates services to the following international scheduled destinations (at January 2005): Dakar, Freetown, Lagos and London.

Fleet

The Gambia International Airlines fleet consists of 1 Boeing 737-200 (at January 2005). It has operated aircraft such as the Fokker F28 and Antonov An-12 (for cargo) in the past.
