GameStop

Encyclopedia : G : GA : GAM : GameStop

GameStop is not to be confused with GameSpot, a gaming website.
GameStop Corporation (NYSE: [GME]), headquartered in Grapevine, Texas, is the world's largest video game and entertainment software retailer. The company operates 4,500 retail stores throughout the U.S., Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Austria, Puerto Rico and Sweden. Retail stores operate under brands GameStop and EBgames, a subsidiary acquired after a merger with Electronics Boutique. In addition, the company runs internet sales websites, GameStop.com and EBgames.com, and Game Informer magazine, a leading video and computer game publication. In addition to video and computer games, the company sells computer and video game magazines and strategy guides, action figures, DVDs (movies, tv shows etc.) and other related merchandise, along with buying used games and movies from its customers. A new store, in a similar vein to Gamestop, called Moviestop, has been slowly building stores in the southeastern United States.

GameStop traces its roots to a mall software retailer Babbage's, which was renamed Babbage's, Etc. when it merged with Software, Etc.. Babbage's, Etc. was purchased by book retail giant Barnes & Noble on October 28, 1999. When Funco, Inc. (operator of Funcoland stores) was acquired by B&N in 2000, there was a corporate restructuring, and Babbage's Etc became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Funco. The name at that time was changed to GameStop, Inc.

Both stores offer trading in games and sell used games but usually sell used games for much more then they buy them for, ripping off gamers around the world.

On October 10, 2005, Gamestop and EB Games (formerly known as Electronics Boutique) merged.
