Gary A. Stevens

Encyclopedia : G : GA : GAR : Gary A. Stevens

Gary Andrew Stevens (born Hillingdon, Middlesex, 30 March 1962) is a former English footballer. He was a versatile defender who could also play in midfield. Nicknamed 'Honest Gaz' he is famed for telling it like it is.

He played for Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur during the 1980s, playing in FA Cup finals for the latter two (scoring a goal in the former, and losing both), and winning the 1984 UEFA Cup with Spurs. He was also capped by England, and was called up to the 1986 World Cup squad (along, confusingly, with the Everton player Gary Stevens). He made three substitute appearances in the tournament.

His career was cut short by injury (after an infamous tackle by Vinnie Jones) in 1988 and he now works in coaching and broadcasting. His main broadcasting job is with Talksport radio in the UK where he regularly acts as a foil for controversial presenter Adrian Durham.
