Gathering of Developers

Encyclopedia : G : GA : GAT : Gathering of Developers

Gathering of Developers (aka God Games and Gathering) was an American videogame publisher based in Dallas, TX (and then later Austin, TX) founded by a number of independent game developers. Gathering was created to serve as a "friendly" publisher for independent development companies.

Fueled by a strong dislike of the way giant publishers treated their developers, Gathering was established as an understanding publisher: not rushing release dates and allowing developers to produce their games as they pleased. However, Gathering did not last long as an independent publisher, and were bought by Take 2 shorty after their creation, in 1999. When Take Two acquired Gathering they also purchased PopTop Software, the developer of Tropico. Gathering's other studios remained independent.

Take Two continued to let Gathering run as a fairly autonomous label (much like their other label, Rockstar Games), publishing most of Take 2's non-budget PC games. Eventually Take 2 took over all operations of Gathering, and have since rebranded the PC-centric label 2K Games.

During the gaming trade event E3, Gathering was known for being extremely extravagant; they were also notorious for their use of 'booth babes'.
