The Gaula river flows through the Gauldal valley in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. It drains a watershed of 3,658 km². In the south it starts from the lake Gaulhåen in Holtålen municipality, where it is joined by a tributary, the Sokna river in Støren village, Midtre Gauldal municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. It runs into Gaulos fjord at Leinstrand, Trondheim in Sør-Trøndelag county. The river Gaula is approximately 145 km.
In 2005 the Gaula became the best salmon fishing river in Norway with a catch of 37.5 tons.
