General Confederation of Labour (Portugal)

The General Confederation of Labour (Portuguese: Confederação Geral do Trabalho, or CGT) was a former Portuguese labour union confederation. The General Confederation of Labour had its roots in the National Worker's Union and was founded in September 13 of 1919. It was greatly influenced by the anarcho-syndicalist movement. In 1924 it became officialy recognized and joined the International Workers Association, at the time, it was composed of an estimated 150,000 members.

After the 28th May 1926 coup d'état, the labour movement suffered a great repression and the General Confederation of Labour would be dismantled.
