- For the American artist, see George Catlin.
He was involved in the last months of WWI fighting on the Western Front.
He married English novelist Vera Brittain in 1925. Their daughter is well-known British politician Shirley Williams, now Baroness Williams of Crosby. They also had a son, John Brittain-Catlin, who died in the mid 1980s.
He was strongly opposed to the treatment of his character in his wife's autobiography (Testament of Youth), and the final version was amended slightly because of this, which his wife regretted. He opposed the re-publication of the book by Virago Press in the late 1970s (several years after the author had died), but relented and allowed it to be done.
