George Richardson Memorial Trophy
Encyclopedia : G : GE : GEO : George Richardson Memorial Trophy
The George T. Richardson Memorial Trophy was presented annually to the Eastern Canadian Junior "A" Champions, played annually from 1932 until 1972 between the top team from Ontario and Quebec. The Trophy is named in honour of George T. Richardson, an Allan Cup winner with Queen’s University in 1909. He was killed in action in World War I on February 9, 1916.
The winner of the Trophy competed against the winner of the Abbott Cup for the Memorial Cup.
In 1972, the format for the Memorial Cup was changed to a round-robin series involving the winners of the Ontario, Quebec, and Western major junior leagues. As a result, the OHL no longer plays in the Eastern Canada Final. Also, in the early 70's, Tier I and Tier II Junior "A" was separated. The Ontario Hockey League now plays for the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League plays for the President's Cup. In Tier II Junior "A", Eastern Canada also has two championships that were created after the retirement of the George Richardson Memorial Trophy. The Dudley Hewitt Cup is the Central Canadian Championship (Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League, Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, and Superior International Junior Hockey League) and the Fred Page Cup is the Eastern Canadian Championship (Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League and Maritime Junior A Hockey League).
