Encyclopedia : G : GE : GEO : Georgetown Preparatory School
Georgetown Preparatory School, situated on 90 acres at 10900 Rockville Pike in North Bethesda, Maryland, is an independent, Jesuit college-preparatory school for young men in grades nine through 12. The school was founded in 1789 by Archbishop John Carroll, S.J., the first Catholic Bishop of the United States. Georgetown Prep is America’s oldest boarding and day school for young men, and the only Jesuit boarding school in the country. Approximately 100 of the school’s 450 students are residents.
A Brief History
In 1789, Archbishop John Carroll founded the Georgetown Preparatory School pursuant to an act of Congress, and its student body included among its first members the family of George Washington. Originally a part of Georgetown University, in the 1890s Georgetown College Preparatory School emerged as a distinct entity, and the current school we know it as today was born (Academy on the Patowmack). Georgetown Prep moved to its present location in North Bethesda, Maryland on July 14, 1915, from its previous location where Georgetown University now resides. Georgetown Prep is located in a suburban setting near the National Institutes of Health and the Bethesda Naval Medical Center, near the Grosvenor Station of the Washington Metro's Red Line, and is 35 minutes from each of Washington's major airports. As of late, the current plant is undergoing massive reconstruction to modernize its 90 acre campus. Phase One of the project, scheduled for completion in Fall 2006, includes a state-of-the-art athletic center, which will feature a 200 meter indoor track, basketball gym, 11 lane swimming pool with diving area, wrestling room, 6000 s.f. weight training/cardiovascular room, team film room and much more. Phase Two of the project will convert the existing field house into a learning center featuring expanded and modern library facilities, classrooms and meeting rooms. The architect for the project is Leo Daly, while Joe Hills, son of golf course arhictect, Arthur Hills, has redesigned the golf course, which is also undergoing construction.Famous Alumni
