Encyclopedia : G : GE : GEO : Georgi Parvanov

Georgi Sedefchov Parvanov (Bulgarian: Георги Седефчов Първанов) (born 28 June 1957) has been President of Bulgaria since 22 January 2002. He is in favour of Bulgarian membership of NATO and the European Union. He identifies himself as a socialist. He became president after defeating his predecessor, Petar Stoyanov, in the November 2001 presidential election.

Controversy

Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov admitted he knew about a secret file of former communist services following his work as historian, according to Sofia News Agency. “There is a file named after “Gotse”. Bulgaria’s ruling coalition has vowed to undertake complete revision of the legislation regulating the opening of files of the former communist-era services. The debate was re launched after the names of two well-known television journalists, who allegedly collaborated with communist secret services, were revealed in the end of May by the interior ministry. Surprisingly, the premier even suggested burning the files should be destroyed.
