Georgy Girl

Encyclopedia : G : GE : GEO : Georgy Girl

Georgy Girl is a 1966 British film and its title song which became a hit single, based on a novel by Margaret Forster.

The film was directed by Silvio Narizzano and starred Lynn Redgrave as Georgy. It also starred Alan Bates, James Mason, and Charlotte Rampling.

Georgy (Lynn Redgrave) is a 22-year-old woman of lower class birth who has never been much of an attraction for men. She is musical, well educated (her parent's employer paid for her education) and has a rather charming if shameless manner. She is homely, haphazardly dressed, and incredibly naïve on the subjects of love and flirtation. She has an inventive imagination and loves children (she runs a nursery class from her parent's employer's home).

Her parents (who are live-in employees) work for a childless, married businessman named James Leamington (James Mason). Leamington has watched Georgy grow up and had began to think of her as a "daughter." This has changed, however, and the viewer is left in no doubt that James' present feelings for Georgy are of a sexual nature.

James offers Georgy a contract, the terms of which are that he will provide her with the luxuries of life in return for her sexual favours, and would provide for any "fruit of the union". His very dry business-like language and manner, even to the extent of a paper contract for a relationship, leave Georgy cold.

Georgy's flatmate is her best friend Meredith (Charlotte Rampling). Meredith, the girlfriend of Jos (Alan Bates), is a pretty, sexy, venal woman who only pursues her own hedonistic pleasures. When Meredith discovers that she is pregnant she marries Jos, and he moves in with the two girls. Jos slowly finds himself attracted to Georgy (he suddenly kisses her while in the midst of an argument with Meredith over her cavalier attitude to pregnancy) and begins having an affair with her. Meredith, eventually, gives birth to a daughter named Sara; however, she couldn't care less about the baby and announces her plans to put poor baby Sara up for adoption and divorce Jos.

Georgy and Jos set up home together in the flat, caring for baby Sara and living as a married couple. It soon becomes clear that Georgy's interest is more in the baby than the adult relationship with Jos. The relationship ends when Jos realises he is of no real importance to Georgy. The social services wish to remove baby Sara from Georgy's care (she is now the sole carer of a baby to whom she has no blood ties). In the meantime, James' wife has died, leaving him a widower. At Georgy's request he has provided all the baby's needs, while she was still living with both Meredith and Jos. It becomes clear that James loves Georgy rather than lusts after her. James approaches Georgy with a marriage proposal, and Georgy (to enable her to keep Sara) accepts. They get married (with the baby joining them on their honeymoon) and adopt baby Sara.

The title song, written by Jim Dale, was a #2 U.S. hit and a #3 British hit in 1966 for Australian pop group The Seekers. It was nominated for an Academy Award for song of the year.
