Gerak
Encyclopedia : G : GE : GER : Gerak
In the science-fiction TV series Stargate SG-1, Gerak, portrayed by Louis Gossett, Jr., was the first leader of the Free Jaffa Nation. Gerak was formerly the First Prime of the Goa'uld Montu, a minor Goa'uld who once served Ra and later fell in with Baal when Ra was killed. Gerak was the first head of the Jaffa High Council and as the leader of the traditionalist faction he was the political rival of Teal'c.
Gerak was first mentioned in "Avalon (Part 2)", when Teal'c's friend Rak'nor told him, that a Jaffa named Gerak was announced the new leader of the Free Jaffa Nation. This was due to the fact that Gerak controlled the greatest military strength of the Jaffa and because Teal'c spent most of his time with the Tau'ri. This also caused the Free Jaffa Nation to be controlled now by a High Council rather than elected officials, as Teal'c wanted to. General Hank Landry of Stargate Command later wants to meet Gerak so that they can discuss about an official treaty with the Free Jaffa Nation. Gerak then visits SGC (thus marking his first appearance in person in the episode "Origin") but instead of negotiating he makes contact with a captured Prior of the Ori and hears his tales of Origin, before the Prior kills himself.
In the episode "Beachhead" Gerak sends three of his Ha'tak to Kallana to help SG-1 in thwarting a plan of the Ori to come to our galaxy. During this event two of his ships are destroyed and he is forced to flee. He appears one episode later in "Ex Deus Machina", during which he hunts Baal, who is hiding on Earth. For this he sends a mothership full of Jaffa troops to Earth to capture the Goa'uld. It is also shown in this episode that most members of the council are on Gerak's side. His forces are finally able to capture Baal and he is executed before the council but it turns out that this Baal was only a clone. However Gerak never becomes aware of this.
In "The Fourth Horseman" Gerak is visited by a Prior, who used to be the Administrator who ordered the execution of Vala Mal Doran, because he thinks that Origin should be the goal of all Jaffa. He even brings this before the Council, much to Teal'c's shock and even the protest of his right hand man Yat'yir. Gerak eventually becomes a Prior himself after seeing the power of the Ori in Celestis, the "City of the Gods" (according to the Priors).
However, the Ori apparently realized that as the ruler of a nation, Gerak would need to remain a little closer to his old self, unlike regular Priors who seem to have cut themselves off completely from their former lives.
Gerak, faced with a revolt led by Teal'c, and the implied possibility of protracted warfare among the Jaffa, abandoned the cause of Origin. He returned with Teal'c to Earth, where he helped to end a Prior-induced plague. This triggered a loyalty fail-safe in Gerak which caused his immediate death. Gerak expected this result, and his final words before his fiery demise declared that he would die a free Jaffa.
