German East African rupie
Encyclopedia : G : GE : GER : German East African rupie
The rupie was the currency of German East Africa from 1890 to 1916. The rupie was equivalent to the Indian rupee. Until 1904, it was subdivided into 64 pesa (equivalent to the Indian pice ot paisa). The currency was decimalized in 1904, with 1 rupie = 100 heller.
In 1916, German East Africa was occupied by British and Belgian forces. The East African shilling replaced the rupie in Tanganyika and the Belgian Congolese franc replaced it in Burundi and Rwanda.
