Germany has appeared in 22 of the 25 editions of the Summer Olympics. The nation appeared 12 times as a single country, before World War II and after re-unification. It has also appeared as two separate nations, East Germany and West Germany 7 times, with each of the two boycotting a different edition during that time. The two nations combined and appeared as a single time 3 times, as the Unified Team of Germany.

Friedrich Traun was defeated by British player John Pius Boland in the first round of the singles tournament, then paired with him as part of a mixed team to win the gold medal in the doubles tournament in 1896. That medal is not counted for Germany.
