Giacinta 'Jinx' Johnson is a fictional character in the James Bond film Die Another Day. She is played by American actress Halle Berry.
Jinx, so nicknamed because she was born on Friday the 13th, is a spy for the National Security Agency. She first meets agent 007 in Havana, where they are both tracking the North Korean terrorist, Zao. The two spies end up working together against Gustav Graves, who is trying to take over the world with a giant laser. She initially becomes his lover merely to find out how MI-6 is involved in the investigation of Zao, but she truly returns his advances after the mission succeeds.
She is instrumental in the success of the mission, killing Graves' henchwoman, Miranda Frost, by impaling her with a sword stabbed through a copy of Sun Tzu's The Art of War.
Her introductory scene, as well as her outfit, is a homage to Honey Ryder in the first James Bond movie, Dr. No.
The portrayal of Jinx as a spy for the NSA is technically inaccurate; the real NSA is responsible for code-breaking and intercepting and analyzing signal transmission, not physical operations. It should be noted, however, that this misconception is common in fiction. It is also interesting to note that she plainly states that the NSA has been evesdropping on Zao's communications. Thus, the writers tried to connect her actions to the NSA's primary responsibility.
Many fans resented the character of Jinx in Die Another Day as a shameless attempt to make a female analog of Bond (similar to Sydney Bristow) that could star in her own series of spin-off films. However, perhaps due to this lukewarm reaction, plans for a Jinx spin-off film have been scrapped.
Rumors
MGM officially pulled the plug on the Jinx spinoff on October 27, 2003. Recently, however, the website MovieHole has stated otherwise. [link] According to their report, Sony Pictures Entertainment is currently in talks with Berry to reprise her role. The article points out the interesting move by Sony since they are releasing a new Bond movie, Casino Royale, starring a new Bond actor, Daniel Craig.|- style="text-align: center;"
