Gift shop

Encyclopedia : G : GI : GIF : Gift shop

A gift shop is a store primarily selling souvenirs relating to a particular topic, often to simply provide evidence that the consumer has visited that location. The items sold are generally fairly trivial, often including specialty food, coffee mugs, stuffed animals, t-shirts, and postcards. Items in these stores are generally marked at a higher price than its generic equivalent, as much of the cost is simply to distinguish it as a souvenir.

Gift shops are normally found in areas with frequent tourism, such as museums, national parks, or historic sites. Common nicknames include "tourist trap" and "rubber-tomahawk store."
