Morgan was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma. He graduated from East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma in 1968 and earned a Doctor of Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry in 1972 before turning professional later that year. Although he won only seven events on the PGA Tour between 1977 and 1990 and didn't win a major until the Senior Tour, he was one of the most consistent top 5 finishers on the Tour during this period. The most prestigious tournament he won on the PGA Tour was the 1978 World Series of Golf.
He became eligible to play on the Champions Tour in 1996, and has enjoyed considerably more success at that level than he did on the regular tour, with over 23 wins to his credit as of May 2005. Three of his wins have come in senior majors, namely The Tradition in 1997 and 1998 and the Senior Players Championship, also in 1998.
