Schools RugbyDempsey was an outstanding schoolboy footballer and during his time in Terenure College he helped the school to a Senior Cup trophy. After the final (a match in which he sprinted home to score a try that will live long in the memory) Girvan was quoted as saying, "It was a privilege to attend a school of the quality of Terenure, God bless".Current CareerGirvan is also known as "Girve the swerve" and "Girvokoko" (derived from the All Black winger Joe Rokocoko) and is a favourite of Leinster supporters at their home ground in Donnybrook. He is admired for his composure under the high ball and bravery in defence. Although not renowned for his attacking abilities, Dempsey has improved this facet of his game immeasurably under the coaching of Micahel Cheika and David Knox. The Swerve started his rugby career at Terenure College and played full back for Terenure College RFC. Girvan has over 50 international caps for Ireland and scored the match winning try in Ireland's famous victory over England at Twickenham in 2004. Most recently he helped Ireland to a 2006 Triple Crown victory with a valuable impact off the bench in Ireland's 28-24 victory over England. For Ireland's match against the Wallabies in Perth in June 2006 Girvan was recalled to the Irish starting line-up in place of Geordan Murphy, the first time he has ousted Murphy from the lineup when both players were fit.Trademark MovesGirvan's main attacking weapon is the "up and under". It's such a dangerous counter attacking weapon that opposing teams are afraid to kick the ball to him and as a result the "Girvy-owen" as it's now called, only gets seen about once every 10 minutes. Besides the the "Girvy-owen" his other most renowned rugby manoeuvre is his famed "Shwerve" with which he bamboozled defenders using his Shakira-like hips. This move has earned him the oft-repeated nickname "The Shwervenator."Away from rugbyOn July 8th 2006 Dempsey wed his fiancee Anne-Marie Craig in Kilquade, County Wicklow.MiscellaneousIt is rumoured that Girvan Dempsey was named after another rugby great- legendary Welsh fly half Girvan John, also know as "the King". However, since John's career overlapped somewhat with Dempsey's birth, historians consider this unlikely. Most believe that his prescient parents, anticpating the rugby colossus their son would become, picked a name that would rhyme with the verb for changing direction at high velocity. He is often confused with a Lamont because of his bountiful head of hair, scintillating pace and great recycling skills. The man has often said that his proudest day was being asked to open the Rathgar Tennis Club Recycling Centre; it stands for everything that's right about Terenure and post-Haughey Ireland in general.Career After RugbyDempsey is reported to have been offered a part in an Off Broadway production of David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago, in the role made famous by Rob Lowe in the motion picture About Last Night....Quotes"It was a privilege to attend a school of the quality of Terenure, God bless". On winning the Senior Cup Final with his beloved Terenure in 1999. "...stands for everything that's right about Terenure and post-Haughey Ireland in general." On Rathgar Tennis Club's new recycling facility.
