Glaciated valley
Encyclopedia : G : GL : GLA : Glaciated valley
Glaciated valleys are a common feature of the landscape of Wales and Scotland, as well as upland parts of England such as the Lake District. They are also found throughout Scandinavia, Europe, Canada and parts of North America.
A hanging valley is a type of glacial valley in which an earlier glaciated valley is cut through by a later and deeper glacier so that the stream in the valley bottom forms a waterfall into the deeper valley.
Terminal moraine left by the retreating glacier is often sufficient to dam up the new river creating a lake in the valley floor.
