Glen Cove is a city in Nassau County, New York on the North Shore of Long Island. As of the United States 2000 Census, the city population was 26,622.

The City of Glen Cove is surrounded by the Town of Oyster Bay. The City of Glen Cove is totally autonomous from the town.

History

The history of the region began in the 17th Century with the Musketa Plantation. The city was originally named Musketa Cove but was later on changed to Glen Cove. Glen Cove was incorporated as a city in either 1910 or 1918.

On August 12, 2005, Glen Cove was struck by an F1 tornado, a rare occurrence on Long Island.

Geography

The city is on the north shore of Long Island and is adjacent to the Long Island Sound.

Glen Cove is located at [40°52′2″N, 73°37′40″W] (40.867326, -73.627738)[Geographic references#1GR1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.9 km² (19.2 mi²). 17.2 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and 32.7 km² (12.6 mi²) of it (65.51%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 26,622 people, 9,461 households, and 6,651 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,545.7/km² (4,006.0/mi²). There were 9,734 housing units at an average density of 565.2/km² (1,464.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.28% White, 6.40% African American, 0.29% Native American, 4.11% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.72% from other races, and 3.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.04% of the population.

There were 9,461 households out of which 29.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $55,503, and the median income for a family was $63,021. Males had a median income of $41,900 versus $30,581 for females. The per capita income for the city was $26,627. About 6.2% of families and 9.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.6% of those under age 18 and 9.3% of those age 65 or over.
