Glenbuck

Encyclopedia : G : GL : GLE : Glenbuck

Glenbuck is a small town in the hills of Muirkirk parish, South Ayrshire, Scotland.

Glenbuck was once a thriving mining community, but very little now remains.

The town is best known for being the birthplace of Bill Shankly, but he was by no means isolated in his success. In fact, the town, whose population seldom exceeded 1,000, produced fifty professional footballers in as many years, with many starting their careers at the (now-defunct) Glenbuck Cherrypickers, though they folded before Shankly was able to break into the first team.

Glenburk was mentioned by Robert Burns in The Brigs of Ayr.
