Glenelg ([34°58′S 138°30′E]) is a suburb of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is a popular coastal resort in summer, and cosmopolitan all year round, situated on Holdfast Bay, in inlet from Gulf St. Vincent.

History

The Old Gum Tree near Glenelg was the site of the reading of the Proclamation by Governor John Hindmarsh creating the colony of South Australia on December 28, 1836. Glenelg is in the City of Holdfast Bay Local Government Area.

The only tram still operating in Adelaide is the Glenelg Tram from Victoria Square in the city to the coast at Glenelg. This was the last significant tram extension built in Adelaide, in 1929. It was originally slated to be closed with the rest of the tram system in 1958, however it was retained as it was thought it still had 10 years of life left in it. Eventually, the decision came to keep it open. In 2006, a 1.2 km extension (read: re-opening) is to be built running from Victoria Square to the Adelaide Railway Station, replacing the shuttle bus that operates as an extension to the tram service now.

Glenelg is also known as the site of the Beaumont children disappearance in 1966.
