Global justice

Encyclopedia : G : GL : GLO : Global justice

Global justice is a concept in political philosophy denoting justice between societies or between individuals in different societies, as opposed to within a specific society. Two questions are particularly problematic in the domain of global justice: the question of the subject – individuals, nations or (societal or transnational) entities – and the question of an intermediatory agency – since there is no legitimate institution and less a unique moral law in the intercultural context. Conceptions of global justice commonly oscillate between the two extreme poles of a moral universalism and a national particularism. The universalistic conception supports that the domain of justice comprises all people everywhere together, without any kind of distinction. In the particularist conception the global demands of justice primarily operate through intersocietal relations rather than through person-to-person relations.

An example for the latter position is the national demand for restitution and reparation as exigencies of historical justice in the case of colonialism or slavery. Some currents in (Latin American and African) liberation philosophies claim, along with dependency theory global political and economic justice between the centre and the periphery, understood as wealthy and poor nations, in order to overcome the state of imperialistic oppression and underdevelopment. However, most conceptions of global justice try to point out an intermediate position, avoiding the unrealistic scenery of moral universalism as well as the separatistic tendencies of national particularism.
