Gnomeregan is a location set in Blizzard Entertainment's video game and book series, Warcraft. In the MMORPG World of Warcraft it acts as an instance dungeon in the virtual world. Gnomeregan also served as the Gnomish capital city before the Trogg invasion.
Background
Gnomeregan (pronounced Nome-ree-gahn) is the underground capital city of the Gnomes. While the gnomes sent technology and supplies to the Alliance during the Second War, the Gnomes themselves did not participate. After the battle at Mt. Hyjal, it was revealed that the Gnomes were fighting off an invasion of Troggs that had broke through the surface inside the city. Under advisement from Mekgineer Thermaplugg, the High Tinker Mekkatorque unleashed radiation on the city in an attempt to kill the Troggs. The maneuver backfired and nearly 80% of the gnomish population died with many others being driven insane. The Troggs themselves absorbed the radiation and became stronger. The High Tinker ordered an evacuation and the remaining Gnomes fled to Ironforge. Thermaplugg quickly disappeared back into the depths of the city, the entire tragedy part of a scheme to take over Gnomeregan.Due to the radiation, the Gnomes now live within the Dwarven capital city of Ironforge in a small district called Tinker Town. A few healthy gnomes remain inside Gnomeregan itself defending an area dubbed The Clean Zone that is both Trogg- and Leper-free. The entrance to Gnomeregan is located at the western mountain ridges of Dun Morogh. It is populated mainly by Troggs, Leper Gnomes and Gnomish technology run amok. Mekgineer Thermaplugg, having betrayed his people now rules the radioactive city in an explosive-laden chamber at the heart of Gnomeregan.
The Horde can gain access to the city via a teleport device designed by the Goblins in Booty Bay. As can anyone with the Engineering skill.
Nomenclature
While geographical short forms are highly varied in any MMORPG, the most common shortform referring to Gnomeregan is "Gnomer". Alternate shortforms may include references to boss(es) within the instance, such as Mekgineer Thermaplugg (who is commonly referred to simply as "Thermaplugg").Instance zone
There are two ways into (and out of) the Gnomeregan instance: a "front door", which is the instance near the end of the rail tracks and a "back door." The back door, which is down a side tunnel at the opposite end of the rail tracks, requires the Workshop Key that drops from a boss about halfway inside the instance. It may also be lockpicked by a rogue. This bypasses the "Clean Zone" and opens up in the Workshop below. Players may also pass through the door as ghosts and return to life using the instance on the other side if they wish. There are numerous types of mobs within Gnomeregan. The most common are Troggs which dominate much of the beginning. Towards the middle, one will begin encountering the Leper Gnomes and numerous mechanized machines. It is important to note the "Alarm Bots" which occasionally patrol the mid-to-late instance often coming up from behind. If not destroyed, they will summon numerous mobs to their location. The Alarm Bots will issue a warning once it moves within a few feet of players giving them about five seconds before new enemies appear. In the later part of the instance, players encounter Dark Iron Agents which can drop land mines. These mines explode in ten seconds, dealing enough damage to kill most party members. This makes them top priority.
Near the beginning of the instance lies the "Clean Zone." It is a safe area with an engineering vendor (he will buy and sell items but not repair armor or weapons,) a mailbox, and the Sparklematic 2000 cleaning machines. Any "Grime Encrusted Object" found in the instance can be cleaned for a nominal fee of three silver. Each object can yield a gem, stone, metal ores, or a Green (uncommon) magic item. The quest item "Grime Encrusted Ring" can also be cleaned by one of these machines. The Gnome guards here do not respond to Troggs so pulling Troggs into the "Clean Zone" looking for help is a wasted effort. Likewise, the "medic" Gnomes do not heal players. The NPCs here do react to Horde players so it is suggested that the Horde go the long way around taking the path to the left rather then heading down the stairs.
Many players find Gnomeregan somewhat tedious and difficult once players descend into the lower levels. Players need to pay attention and watch for patrols and healers are greatly put to the test. Lower level players may make things difficult for a party as the aggro radius for most enemies is wide. Despite the difficulty, Gnomeregan does offer some good magic items for the level range and the quests inside are the best way to increase your reputation with the Gnomeregan Exiles.
