Goa, Daman, and Diu

Encyclopedia : G : GO : GOA : Goa, Daman, and Diu

Goa, Daman, and Diu was a union territory of India from 1962 to 1987. The union territory comprised the present-day state of Goa and the small coastal enclaves of Daman and Diu on the coast of Gujarat. The territory, along with Dadra and Nagar Haveli, inland enclaves located near Daman, formerly comprised Portuguese India. The territories were seized from Portugal in 1961, and their incorporation into india wasn't recognized by Portugal until 1975. Administratively the territory was divided into three districts, Goa, Daman, and Diu. In 1987 Goa was granted statehood, and Daman and Diu was made a separate union territory.
