Gobar Goho

Encyclopedia : G : GO : GOB : Gobar Goho

Gobar Goho is a legendary Indian wrestler and a practitoner of the Indian style of Pehlwani wrestling.

Gobar won several wrestling tournaments in the fabled milked sand wrestling pits of India, enduring rules which allowed punishing joint locks and submission holds banned in various American amateur wrestling tournaments.

Gobar finally got his chance at the world championship against legendary cath wrestler Ad Santel, Santel was a "hooker" by his wrestling style and was famous for his defeat of the best judokas of the fabled Kodokan.

The World Championship Match in San Francisco

The match occurred in 1922 in San Francisco, California. Santel coming off a dominance of 1914-1921 as the self proclaimed World Judo Champion was the unanimous favourite against the lesser known (and reportedly lesser technically profiecient) Gobar.

By the end of this match, Gobar Goho had done the impossible, defeated the legend that was Ad Santel and claimed the World Heavyweight Championship in front of an appreciative yet surprised San Francisco crowd.
