Goenitz
Encyclopedia : G : GO : GOE : Goenitz
Leopold Goenitz is a video game character who made his first appearance in the Neo Geo fighting game, The King of Fighters '96 as the last boss, following Chizuru Kagura. He is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi, with the power to command wind. His trademark move is his Yonokaze (with the move's matching catchphrase being "Koko desu ka", meaning "Right here?"), wherein a nightside tornado comes up at random, slicing any foe it touches.
History
Murder of Maki
Goenitz did not appear with strength until the year of 1986, while many fighters where only young boys and girls. He showed up at the village of the Clan of the Yata, the people that took care of the seal that was imposed on the Orochi power. He then beckoned for the then heir of the Yata, Maki Kagura, who is Chizuru's sister to face him in battle. Maki cursed his presence and the fact he wants to resurrect the Orochi by breaking the Seal of the Yata. Goenitz just chuckled and began to display his immense power. His aura was so powerful and devastating it was too much for the Yata clan member to hold. With an immense gust of wind, Goenitz blew the Yata clan member away. Leaving Maki in a life-and-death situation, he tells her that the Orochi power will be free once again, and that his task would be much easier if he had allies with him. With that said, he disappears in a night breeze.Dealing with Rugal Bernstein
Sometime later after the incident, a power-hungry tyrant named Rugal Bernstein wanted to grasp the Orochi power for himself, and become the most feared and powerful man in the world. Sensing a disturbance in the Orochi power balance, Goenitz soon transports himself to where the entity attempts to steal the precious Orochi power. Rugal was shocked at Goenitz's quick appearance. Goenitz warns Rugal menacingly that any mere mortal that wants to have the Orochi power for their personal gains is sure to only gain death for their futile attempt. Rugal discards this warning, and tells Goenitz he will have the power of the Orochi no matter what or who stands in his way. Rugal proceeds to attack Goenitz, but Goenitz would raise his right hand towards Rugal, and gouge out his right eye. Rugal would then reel and suffer at this new-found pain. Goenitz, however, is surprised that Rugal is still alive after the assault made to him. With a menacing grin, he tells Rugal that the Orochi power will be his own doom. He then transfuses a sample of the Orochi power into his blood. Rugal would then feel more pain, then lie on the floor near unconscious. Goenitz leaves, and finally tells Rugal that he must not use this power until completely necessary, since it will kill him. Goenitz then leaves Rugal to his fate, not before ordering his two aides, the assassin women Mature and Vice, to keep an eye on him, and see that he never uses the power of Orochi against them.Riot of Blood
Goenitz then goes to a remote village, where several Orochi blood members still live. He presumes that they would gladly help him in his task to gather fighting energy for the Orochi. However, Guidel, the leader if the village, refuses to help Goenitz since they have found peace and tranquility and does not want to collaborate in the destruction of the world. Goenitz gets furious, but he then spots a little girl coming out of Guidel's house. Seeing how gracious and full of spirit she was, Goenitz then leers at Guidel and tells him that he will regret ever having betrayed their own bloodline. That same night, the little girl called Leona began to feel sick, and soon enough, she lost consciousness. Before her family could take care of her, she mysteriously woke up, with a very sinister look in her eyes. Guidel recognized those blood-filled eyes. It was the Riot of Blood. But it was too late. The mortal rampage of Leona began, and did not stop until the whole village was destroyed, not leaving anybody alive. Goenitz contemplates with glee the death and destruction, and heads towards the blood-stained Leona. Goenitz touches her head, and tells her that she is still too young to be able to control the power for too long, so he would have to wait until she became an adult. Saying so, he begins to walk away. Goenitz laughs, as he knows that Leona would be of use to him pretty soon.Meeting with Old Foes
A good amount of time has passed since something was heard from Goenitz, who had seemed to go scavanging the world for more energy to supply Orochi with. He once took a journey to Japan, and decided it was time to see how much the Kusanagi have improved since 1800 years ago.He decided to challenge Kyo alone, the latest descendant of the Kusanagi clan. He fought him, but Kyo's techniques seemed so primitive for Goenitz, who had no trouble in putting the young warrior out of commission.
Sensing that that was not all the young warrior could do, he beckoned for him to challenge him when he was more prepared for the next King of Fighters tournament. He left a wounded and humiliated Kyo wretching on the ground.
Soon, he sensed it was time to wrap up the job. He heard about Rugal's death by using the Orochi power, and he commissioned Mature and Vice to now keep an eye on Iori Yagami, who also had Orochi blood in his veins, due to the unholy pact the Yagami and the Orochi had 660 years ago, unleashing the war against the Kusanagi. Yagami family was always overshadowed by Kusanagi, and Orochi decided to use that toward his advantage, and persuaded Yagami to make the unholy pact.
KOF 96
He followed the King of Fighters tournament of 1996 closely, always hidden in the shadows. He was impressed by all those strong fighters, and wished he could fight them all, but he had to concentrate on the strongest only. He was also very pleased at seeing Leona there as well. She had grown alright, but he was still unsure of using her just yet. Soon, the finals began, and Goenitz was there. He then saw a woman coming out for the final battle against the Hero Team. Goenitz identified her as a Clan of the Yata member. She seemed so much as that woman she killed ten years ago. Maybe her sister? Goenitz stalled until the defeat of Chizuru. Then, taking advantage that everybody was dumbfounded, Goenitz gathered all his power and unleashed it, reducing the plethoric stadium into mere rubble. Goenitz then greeted Kyo once again, and asked if he had improved anything since the last time they met. Kyo smiled and tells Goenitz he had changed a lot. It was true, since Goenitz now had a harder time trying to neutralize Kyo. And when it was evident that he would finish Kyo, Iori appeared to help him. It was rare for Goenitz that this would happen. Iori shouts to Goenitz that Kyo is his alone, and Goenitz suspects that Mature and Vice must have left him alive in order for him to kill Goenitz. Cursing both of them, Goenitz now has to face Kyo and Iori, reviving the ancient battle between the Orochi and the Kusanagi/Yagami alliance from 1800 years ago. However, it was too much for Goenitz to handle himself, despite his incredible strength. Goenitz is then defeated by a double crimson flame blow from both Kyo and Iori. Before dissipating, Goenitz chuckles, and tells Chizuru, Kyo, and Iori that the Orochi power is far from being eradicated, and that soon the world and themselves would have to bow to Orochi's incredible power. Goenitz then raises his hand and vanishes in a gust of wind, never to be seen again.Trivia
- Though he has only officially appeared in one King of Fighters game, SNK has acknowledged Goenitz as one of the most popular KOF characters.
- Goenitz has a very polite personality, which is reflected in his winning poses (in one of them he bows at the camera, and he repeats it after performing his Yonokaze in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom) and his elegant, somewhat flowery speech.
- Goenitz's full heavenly king title is "Fuki Sasebu Kaze no Leopold Goenitz" (Leopold Goenitz of the Wildly-Blowing Wind)
- In the non-canonical The King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood, a young boy named Shinobu Amou is forced to channel the spirit of Goenitz.
- Goenitz also appears in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom and suffers from SNK Boss Syndrome, though he is not a boss in this game (through repeated use of his Yonokaze).
- It was only in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom where his identity as a former Catholic priest is fully confirmed. It is believed that this is his occupation before his own awakening to the power of Orochi. The first speculation that he is a priest is seen through his spoken quotes; namely, his introduction, 2nd win pose and 3rd win pose, wherein he says in Japanese, "Pray to your God quickly!", "Repent while you still can." and "May God bless you!", respectively.
- Goenitz's theme music is titled Trash Head, presumably poking fun at his hairstyle.
- The nationality of Goenitz remains a subject of guessing. Some have speculated he is German, due to the appearance and pronunciation of his family name. It is obvious however, that he may have originated from a European country.
- On several occasions, he has been linked to Ryuji Yamazaki, also a member of the Orochi bloodline, as a sibling or even twins. This is because both of them sport the same hairdo, despite radically different personalities. It has been repeatedly stressed that Yamazaki and Goenitz are not biological brothers.
- On the same note, many have thought that Goenitz is in KOF 97, but through the crazed personage of Yamazaki. In addition, some have even thought that they are one and the same.
- A bonus artwork in the Sega Saturn port of KOF 97 shows a bald Goenitz and Yamazaki fighting over a toupee.
- For quite some time, people thought Goenitz was hidden in KOF 98, due to appearing in the banner presented when beating the game with an edit team. However, the banner was simply showcasing each KOF Fighter who had not been in a fighting game before KOF (Which is why the Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting characters are absent from it)
- Goenitz appears as Leona's Another Striker in KOF 2000.
- Goenitz is an unlockable secret character in the console version of KOF 2002 for the PlayStation 2 & Xbox.
- In Omega Rugal's stage, Black Noah, in KOF 98, a silhouette of a beheaded Goenitz seated in a corner with wires attached from his neck can be seen on the extreme left side of the stage. It may be difficult to see due to the darkness of the stage.
