''Steps to : Appearance
Gogans characteristically combine gothic and punk dress with promotional band t-shirts (typically of semi-goth or metal bands). Common accessories include bangles, dangly earrings, hair highlights, ripped fishnet stockings and DBs.Attitudes
Gogans are often mocked as "teenybopper poseurs" who use the "goth" label to appear "different", while not actually subscribing to the attitudes and aesthetics of goth subculture. Many goths dislike gogans because they are perceived to impact negatively on the public's opinion of goths in general. In response, many younger goths claim "Gogan" and "Bogoth" are examples of arrogant mislabelling.History
The term originated in Perth, Western Australia and is semi-synonymous with Pog, from "Post Office Goth" (and later the — intentionally ironic — acronym for the Perth Order of Gothic Societies Inc.[#endnote_POGS], originally the Perth Organisation of Gothic Societies). This term emerged because of the large number of goths who loiter near the Perth GPO. (Arguably, the golden era of post office loitering dates from the late 1990s through 2004, when the area the goths congregated was sold to a surfwear company, forcing them to give up the stoop that had become their traditional home.)Family
Gogan is also a family name. The Gogans are remembered for the work they did on the construction of Tintern Abbey in both the 21st and 13th Centuries, as was noted recently on the BBC website [link]References
