Gonarch

Gonarch is a fictional creature in the 1998 first-person shooter computer game Half-Life. Gonarch, nicknamed 'Big Momma' by the developers at Valve Software, is an enormous alien that produces baby headcrabs. It is a boss featured in one of the last chapters of the game, appropriately called "Gonarch's Lair", located in the Xen border world.

Its anatomy is similar to that of the headcrab, except that Gonarch sports an armour-like exoskeleton and four spindly legs that hold it upright several meters above the ground. Gonarch has no visible head, mouth, or sensory organs of any kind. A sac dangles beneath the creature, from which underdeveloped baby headcrabs constantly spawn. These "babies" are nearly harmless individually, but Gonarch produces them in such numbers that they can quickly overwhelm even well-protected prey.

This "mother headcrab" is viciously territorial and remarkably speedy. Intruders face crushing, piercing assaults by its massive, pointed legs and acidic secretions forcefully emitted from the top of its shell. Gonarch unleashes an elephant-like cry when angered or injured, and its approach is accompanied by a sound similar to the rapid gallop of a horse. When one of its offspring dies, it will often emit an unusual and sad-sounding cry.

The exoskeleton affords Gonarch a remarkable level of protection. It is extremely difficult to kill, absorbing massive amounts of damage before succumbing (and surviving more explosive damage than even a Gargantua). Concentrating fire on the soft, unprotected sac is the quickest way to kill it.

The player, as Gordon Freeman, visits "Gonarch's Lair" near the end of Half-Life.

Half-Life 2

While not in Half-Life 2 proper, there exists in the game a model of an amputated Gonarch. This Gonarch, essentially nothing but a sac, was covered by many metallic supports [link]. Likely, this model would have been used to explain how the Combine had access to so many headcrabs - by forcing Gonarchs to constantly produce them.
