Google Labs is a website demonstrating new Google projects "that aren't quite ready for prime time". It serves as a testing ground for new services being developed. This is a way for Google to gain feedback on the products before releasing the final versions. Google's services do not always appear on the Labs page; some are beta tested by invitation-only, such as Gmail and Google Calendar.

Logo

In 2006, all Google Labs products had a consistent logo, using the chemical jar, and a gray title, as opposed to other color-coded Google products, such as Google News and Google Maps. This warns users that the product may contain bugs, and could be unfit for general use.

List of Google Labs products

Services and tools currently available at Google Labs are:

• Google Extensions for Firefox (including Google Browser Sync, Google Send to Phone and Blogger Web Comments)
• Google Spreadsheets (limited test)
• Picasa for Linux
• Google Notebook
• Google Trends
• Google Related Links
• Google Mars
• Google Page Creator
• Google Dashboard Widgets for Mac (including Blogger, Gmail and Search History widgets)
• Google Transit
• Google Reader
• Google Web Accelerator
• Google Ride Finder
• Google Suggest in Japanese
• Google Suggest
• Froogle Mobile
• Google Sets

A number of tools that have been taken away from Google Labs, either because the idea was not working or if it was ready for a wider release. (If the product was ready for wider release, it "graduated" from Google Labs.) These are:

• Google Video
• Google Personalized Search
• Google Personalized Homepage
• Google Maps
• Google Scholar
• Google SMS
• Google Desktop
• Google Groups
• Web Alerts (merged into Google Alerts)
• Search by Location: restricts searches geographically (now incorporated with Google Maps)
• Google Glossary: provides definitions of words, according to other websites (now incorporated with Google Web Search)
• Google News Alerts (merged into Google Alerts)
