Gore is a town in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 850 at the 2000 census. The town was originally known as "Campbell," but later changed its name in honor of Oklahoma Senator Thomas Gore, a distant relative of Albert Gore, Sr., the Tennessee Senator and father of U.S. Vice President Al Gore.
Gore is the trout capital of Oklahoma, with great fishing in Lake Tenkiller, the Illinois River.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²).
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 850 people, 368 households, and 257 families residing in the town. The population density was 143.9/km² (372.4/mi²). There were 416 housing units at an average density of 70.4/km² (182.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 68.59% White, 0.12% African American, 24.71% Native American, 0.12% from other races, and 6.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.82% of the population.There were 368 households out of which 28.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.78.
In the town the population was spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,266, and the median income for a family was $37,000. Males had a median income of $28,125 versus $27,188 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,059. About 15.2% of families and 16.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 21.1% of those age 65 or over.
Child abuse case
In mid-2005, local authorities discovered that Melanie Smith, along with her husband Roy Smith, had been abusing Melanie's son from a previous marriage. Police discovered that the boy had been starved and given green rubbing alcohol to drink (which they told him was Kool-Aid). Additionally, as punishment, he had to lift a heavy metal bar over his head, and at one point, the bar collapsed and broke his nose. Another family member, Sharon Smith, was also brought up on charges. She was set free on bail.Source: The Guardian Resident, a local paper.
