Grameen Phone is a GSM-based mobile phone company in Bangladesh. It started operations there on March 26, 1997. It is partly owned by Telenor (62 percent) and Grameen Telecom (38 percent).

As of June 2006, Grameen Phone is the largest mobile phone company in Bangladesh, with more than 8.5 million subscribers.

Products Offered

Grameen Phone offers subsription of two catagories, Pre-Paid Subscription and Post-Paid Subscription.

Pre-Paid subscriptions are sub divided into

Easy (mobile to mobile connectivity within Bangladesh),
Easy Gold (Natiowide and International mobile and landphone connectivity)
DJuice(mobile to mobile connectivity within Bangladesh).

Post-Paid subscription includes

GP-Regular (Nationwide and International mobile and landphone connectivity)
GP-National (mobile to mobile connectivity and nationwide landphone incoming facility)
Anytime 500 (Nationwide and International mobile and landphone connectivity)
Anytime 300.

Grameen Phone also offers its subscribers different Value Added Services which includes SMS (Short Message Service), Voice SMS, SMS Push-Pull Service, Voice Mail Service (VMS), Fax and Data etc.

Recently, it has initiated EDGE connectivity service for its subscribers.

Brief History

GrameenPhone received a License for Cellular Phone operation in Bangladesh from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications back in November 28, 1996.

After receiving the license, GrameenPhone started its operation on the Independence Day of Bangladesh March 26, 1997.

GrameenPhone offered a mobile-to-mobile connectivity (widely known as GP-GP connection) which creats a huge enthusiasm among the users.

GrameenPhone crosses the milestone of one million subscriber, first operator to do so in Bangladesh. Then its subcriber base reaches to five million within a very short period of time.

GrameenPhone was the first mobile operator in Bangladesh to offer EDGE services to its subscribers.

Numbering Scheme

Grameenphone uses the following numbering scheme for its subscribers

+88 017 N₁N₂N₃N₄N₅N₆N₇N₈

where the first 88 is the International Subscriber Dialling Code for Bangladesh and is needed only in case of dialling from outside.

017 is the prefix for GrameenPhone as allocated by the Government of Bangladesh.

The number N₁ to N₈ is the subscriber number.
