Grants is a city in Cibola County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 8,806 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cibola County[Geographic references#6GR6].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.4 km² (13.7 mi²), all land. Grants is on the north end of the large and recent (youngest flows around 15,000 years old) lava field of El Malpais National Monument.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 8,806 people, 3,202 households, and 2,321 families residing in the city. The population density was 248.7/km² (644.4/mi²). There were 3,626 housing units at an average density of 102.4/km² (265.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 56.18% White, 1.62% African American, 11.97% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 24.80% from other races, and 4.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 52.36% of the population.

There were 3,202 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 17.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,652, and the median income for a family was $33,464. Males had a median income of $31,870 versus $20,808 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,053. About 19.4% of families and 21.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 31.8% of those under age 18 and 11.1% of those age 65 or over.

Education

All public schools in the county are operated by Grants/Cibola County Schools.

Two elementary schools, Mesa View Elementary School and Mount Taylor Elementary School, serve Grants. Los Alamitos Middle School and Grants High School serve Grants.

There is a branch of New Mexico State University. The branch offers a two-year postsecondary program Address: NMSU, 1500 N. Third Street, Grants. NM 87020.
