Greasel (Deus Ex)

Encyclopedia : G : GR : GRE : Greasel (Deus Ex)

The Greasel is a fictional creature that exists only in the computer games Deus Ex and its sequel . The Greasel from the original Deus Ex resembles a large green flightless bird though on closer inspection it is more reptilian than avian. Its clawed wings are useless for flight, though they do increase the Greasel's speed.

The classification of the Greasel is not known as it is the product of genetic engineering by VersaLife, which also manufactures the Gray Death virus and Ambrosia, the virus’ corresponding vaccine. The Karkian and Greys are the only other creatures that Versalife is known to have created from its Genetically Modified Organism Project. The Greasel can be first encountered in the MJ-12 Lab Facility portion of the game, and later in other areas as well, mostly in some military bases, and the VersaLife Headquarters (in Hong Kong), all of which are controlled by Majestic 12. All Greasels are hostile and will attack on sight by launching poison from its mouth (when within range), much like a spitting cobra (from which its morphology is largely based upon), Greasels have not been known to use their claws when attacking. When a Greasel has sustained enough injuries it will flee and attempt to hide. Greasels have also been know to make croaky, warbling cries, particularly when they are in pain.

In Invisible War, greasels are used in gladitorial fights, particularly in Lower Seattle. They are found and raised by trainers before being thrown into the arena. The player can even place bets on the outcome. The locals of Lower Seattle refer to the VersaLife mutants (which also includes Grays and Karkians, both of which can be found in Seattle) as "gobs".

Also in Invisible War, many sources hint that a variant of the Greasel - a Red one - exists.Edit: They can be seen by opening the deus ex files in UnrealEd, apparently. Supposedly more violent and deadlier than the standard green variant, the Red Greasel makes no appearance in either game, However a pistol called the "Red greasel hunter" does appear in the game (this uses an infrared light for the alt fire (as opposed to the normal one on the rest of the pistols) Exploring an abandoned VersaLife lab, however, offers an explanation: the Red Greasels are so violent that they have a tendency to consume their own offspring. As such, the likelihood that a great deal of these variant didn't survive The Collapse, and only those who lived in the game world for years would see one.

Physical description

Compare with Velociraptor especially for avian-lizard characteristics.
