Great Lakes Invitational

Encyclopedia : G : GR : GRE : Great Lakes Invitational

The Great Lakes Invitational is a four-team NCAA men's ice hockey tournament held annually at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit around Christmas time as part of College Hockey at The Joe. Although many college hockey tournaments take place when the holidays coincide with collegiate Christmas break, the GLI is arguably the most prestigious.

Hosted by Michigan Technological University and co-hosted by the University of Michigan, the event was first held in 1965 at the Olympia as a way for Michigan Tech alumni to congregate in southeast Michigan.

Michigan State University is traditionally selected as a third participant while the fourth is invited from college hockey's elite ranks. In years past, Boston College, Boston University, the University of North Dakota, and the University of New Hampshire have taken part. In 2006, Harvard University is scheduled to compete. This is a throw-back to the early days of the tournament when an Ivy League team was a traditional selection.
