In Greek mythology, the underworld indicate the kingdom of deaths. It is a subterranean place ruled by the god Hades (in Greek Ἅιδης, Haides), and for this reason it is often referred to as the kingdom of Hades or simply Hades .

Description

The details concerning the nature of Hades are variable. It contains several remarkable places however:

• the Elysian fields (or later the Isles of the Blessed), the final resting place of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous;
• the lugubrious Asphodel Meadows, where the phantoms of the dead carry out a dull and insubstantial existence;
• the Tartarus, where those who offended the gods are subjected to eternal punishment.
