Greene County is a county in central Virginia in the eastern United States. As of 2000, the population is 15,244. Its county seat is Stanardsville6.
History
Greene County was established in 1838 from Orange County. The county is named for American Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene.Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 407 km² (157 mi²). 406 km² (157 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it (0.25%) is water.Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 15,244 people, 5,574 households, and 4,291 families residing in the county. The population density was 38/km² (97/mi²). There were 5,986 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (38/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 90.99% White, 6.45% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 5,574 households out of which 38.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% were married couples living together, 10.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.00% were non-families. 18.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the county, the population was spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 33.20% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $45,931, and the median income for a family was $48,548. Males had a median income of $32,020 versus $26,864 for females. The per capita income for the county was $19,478. About 4.80% of families and 6.60% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.70% of those under age 18 and 7.10% of those age 65 or over.
