Encyclopedia : G : GR : GRE : Gregory Itzin

Gregory Itzin (Born January 21 1951) is an American TV actor. He has appeared in guest starring roles on various television shows. His most recent major role has been President Charles Logan on the popular television drama 24. He originally intended to become a theater actor, receiving training at The American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He has appeared on many stages across the country. He received a Tony Award nomination for his role in the Pulitzer Prize winning play The Kentucky Cycle.

In 2005, Itzin joined the cast of 24 in 2004, halfway through its fourth season, in the recurring role as Vice President Charles Logan, who was sworn in as President after President Keeler was critically injured in a terrorist attack on Air Force One. Fans initially disliked the character, who had difficulty making decisions and handling the intense pressures of the office, but the show's producers loved Itzin's work so much that they wrote the entire fifth season (2006) around the character. President Logan was given a wife, Martha (Jean Smart), and the story of their volatile marriage (which played out over the backdrop of a national terror crisis) was widely considered to be the highlight of the season. Fans were astonished, and television critics all over the country began singling Itzin out for his complex performance. On July 6, 2006, Itzin received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his acclaimed Season Five performance. (Jean Smart was also nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category for her performance as Martha.)

At the end of Season Five, President Logan was arrested and presumably removed from office, but over summer 2006, Itzin, Smart, and the show's producers were quoted in various publications as saying that the Logans would return in some capacity for 24's sixth season, set to begin in January 2007.

Itzin has held recurring roles on popular TV series such as Friends as Theodore Hannigan, Murder One, Navy NCIS, Judging Amy, Boston Legal, , The Practice and the short-lived science fiction series, Firefly.

Itzin is also a frequent Star Trek actor, having played five different roles in the various series over the years; his most recent Trek role was Admiral Black in [[Star Trek: Enterprise]]. He made his first Star Trek appearance in 1993, in the [[Star Trek: Deep Space Nine]] episode "Dax".

Itzin lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Judie, an artist, and their son and daughter. Itzin has three piercings in his right ear lobe and often wears red, white and blue studs in them denoting the American flag.

In the movie Airplane!, Itzin plays Religious Zealot #1, and has the first lines in the movie, but disappears after the first scene.
