Ground warfare in the 21st century involves three distinct types of combat units: Infantry, Armour and Artillery.

Infantry generally means foot soldiers, whose key features include the ability to move over a wide variety of terrain, flexibility and the ability to quickly use cover or move from it.

By armor, we generally mean tanks or other mobile, highly durable units. In the first half of the 20th century, armor replaced the traditional role that cavalry had played. Now, as in the past, the key feature of these units is rapid mobility to apply force.

Artillery, known as "the king of the battlefield," includes basically units that fire large projectiles from a distance.

The categories have blurry edges, of course: there is mobile artillery, and there is mechanized infantry, etc.
