Group Areas Act

Encyclopedia : G : GR : GRO : Group Areas Act

The Group Areas Act of 1950 (Act No. 41 of 1950) was an act of parliament created under the Apartheid government of South Africa that assigned races to different residential and business sections in urban areas. This led to people being forcibly removed for living in the "wrong" areas.

This act was finally repealed 41 years later, on June 5 1991 — at the same time as the Land Act of 1913 (see Apartheid).
