This rank is used instead of Private who is a member of (in Canada) the Governor General's Foot Guards or the Canadian Grenadier Guards.

The rank is non-gender specific and therefore applies equally to female soldiers, who are not to be called by the nonexistent "Guardswoman" or "Guardsperson".

The rank badge is identical to that of a Private, to wit, a single chevron.
