Guerrilla News Network

Encyclopedia : G : GU : GUE : Guerrilla News Network

Guerrilla News Network (GNN) is an underground news organization. Its mission is to "expose people to important global issues through guerrilla programming on the web and on television." They do this both through original editorials and pasted news reports from press agencies and other mainstream news outlets. A completely free website, GNN is user driven; users/contributors receive a free blog page. GNN publishes submissions based on a voting system, wherein users/contributors who have had more publications on GNN have more voting weight. Submissions with enough votes are published to the front page, while everything else remains on its creators page until getting enough votes. GNN allows submissions of original content in the form of 'articles'. These must be wholly original, sourced, and accompanied by a photograph or illustration. GNN also publishes 'headlines', which are simply republished news articles deemed relevant by the users who vote on them. GNN was founded in 2000. Their headquarters are in New York City and they have production facilities in Berkeley, California.

They also produced music videos for artists such as Ad Rock, Eminem and 50 Cent.

History

Channel Zero

An earlier incarnation of GNN was co-founder Stephen Marshall's "video-news company," Channel Zero, which first rose to prominence in Canada in the mid-nineties. Channel Zero's big break came with the opportunity to produce segments for the CBC's flagship news show, The National, in response to the executive producer's desire to "see the envelope pushed more" [link].

Other offshoots of the original Channel One concept include (also on CBC) and Al Gore's Current TV (née INdTV), which replaced the CBC's world service, NWI.
