Gugo Veles (born March 30, 1972) is an American poet and writer. He lives in Chicago, IL.
Writing Career
While Veles has published in magazines and on the Internet since early 1990's, including poetry translations, a short story titled Escape and a Russian language novella Invasion (published in Samizdat online magazine in 1999 under the title Vtorzhenije, by Grigorij Veles), his first work published in a book form is the "poetic novel" Rumiyat (January 2006 by BookSurge Publishing).
Rumiyat
As evidenced by the title, Rumiyat is a tribute to the Persian Sufi poet Rumi. A closer examination of this 50-page collection, however, reveals very contemporary romantic and philosophical themes interlaced with humanist sentiments and opposition to the Bush administration's war in Iraq.
Politics and Philosophy
Gugo Veles is an outspoken secular humanist and atheist who is active in humanist organizations. He is a forceful defender of reason, science and humanist values. He has written numerous online articles and book reviews ripping the agenda of the religious right and defending rationalists against attacks by fundamentalists, creationists and adherents of the Intelligent Design theory. The back cover of Rumiyat states that he is working on a historical novel, which is reported to be on the events depicted in the Dead Sea Scrolls and the historicity of Jesus Christ.
