Guilderland is a town in Albany County, New York, USA. The population was 32,688 at the 2000 census. The town is named after the Province of Gelderland in the Netherlands.

The Town of Guilderland is on the north border of the county. It is west of Albany, the capital of New York.

History

The region was once part of Rensselaer. The Town of Guilderland was formed in 1803 from part of the Town of Watervliet. During WWII there was a ammo dump put in Guilderland to supply fuel and ammo to the war effort.

During the American Revolution the town was divided in its loyalties.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 152.0 km² (58.7 mi²). 150.0 km² (57.9 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it (1.31%) is water.

The north town line is the border of Schenectady County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there were 32,688 people, 13,422 households, and 8,764 families residing in the town. The population density was 217.9/km² (564.3/mi²). There were 13,928 housing units at an average density of 92.8/km² (240.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.07% White, 2.51% African American, 0.14% Native American, 3.82% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.79% of the population.

There were 13,422 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $58,669, and the median income for a family was $68,472. Males had a median income of $48,742 versus $34,796 for females. The per capita income for the town was $29,508. About 2.4% of families and 4.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.8% of those under age 18 and 4.0% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Guilderland has its own school district, Guilderland Central School District. It has one high school, Guilderland High School, one middle school, Farnsworth Middle School, and five elementary schools.

Emergency Medical Services are provided by two main, yet separate medical organizations.
