A descendant of the House of Nassau, founded in 1093, which has ruled Luxembourg since 1890, Guillaume is the eldest child of Grand Duke Henri and his wife Maria Teresa Mestre. He is heir apparent since his father's accession in 2000.
Guillaume's education includes Lycée Robert-Schumann in Luxembourg; Beau Soleil and Institut Le Rosey boarding schools in Switzerland; and Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Camberley, England. He failed to complete a degree in political science and history at the University of Durham, England.
Guillaume's duties include Honorary Chairman, Board of Economic Development of Luxembourg and the Kraizberg Foundation, a charitable institution for the disabled.
His only known relationship was with Norwegian Pia Haraldsen, adopted daughter of the nephew of Queen Sonja of Norway (born Haraldsen). They met at the 2001 wedding of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway to Mette Marit Hoiby.
Guillaume has four younger siblings: Prince Félix of Luxembourg (born 3 June 1984), Prince Louis of Luxembourg (born 3 August 1986), Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg (born 16 February 1991), and Prince Sébastien of Luxembourg (born 16 April 1992). Guillaume is interested in music and sports; he plays piano and enjoys soccer, swimming and volleyball. He speaks Luxemburgish, French, German and English. He regularly represents his parents in many foreign activities.
