Gusztáv Sebes (June 21 1906 – January 30 1986) was a Hungarian football (soccer) coach. Sebes a former Hungarian league player with a relatively successful playing career at Vasas SC and MTK Budapest. He became national team manager in 1949, building a squad of players based around the army sides Honvéd and MTK Budapest that became known as the "Magical Magyars". He helped pioneer the tactic of a withdrawn centre-forward, known as the 'WW' formation. He achieved success by coaching Hungary to the gold medal at the 1952 Olympics, and famously defeated England 6-3 in 1953 and 7-1 in 1954. Despite being favourites for the 1954 FIFA World Cup and numerous chances in the final, his team finished runners-up. He died in 1986 aged 79.
