Guus Kouwenhoven

Guus Kouwenhoven (born February 15, 1942) is a Dutch national with ties to former President of Liberia Charles Taylor and the subject of a UN travel ban. Kouwenhoven is President of several companies, two of which, Evergreen Trading and Oriental Timber Corporation, have been linked to Al-Qaeda, as well as diamond and arms smuggling in West Africa.

Trial

Kouwenhoven stands trial at a court in The Hague, which started at April 24, 2006. The court will also try to summon Charles Taylor to testify against Kouwenhoven. Kouwenhoven is charged with arms smuggling and war crimes in Liberia in the 90's.

The Dutch public prosecutors will seek a 20-year jail sentence and a fine of €450,000 against Kouwenhoven.

On June 7, 2006 Kouwenhoven was sentenced to 8 years in jail for arms smuggling. The court did not find him to be guilty of war crimes.
