Guyford Stever

Horton Guyford Stever (19161977) was a U.S. administrator, physicist, educator, and engineer.

Stever graduated from California Institute of Technology in 1941 with a Ph.D. in physics. He then joined the staff of the radiation lab at MIT. In 1942 he served the military as a scientific liaison officer based in London, England until the end of World War II.

He returned to MIT, serving as associated dean of engineering there from 1956-1959. In 1965 he became president of Carnegie Mellon University, a position he held until 1972.

He also served as the director of the National Science Foundation from 1972 until 1976. Finally he was a presidential science advisor between 1973 and 1977.

Stever received a LL.D. from Bates College in 1977.
